Dear Ksenia,
On behalf of the Geophysics Department, we are seriously considering you for admission to Stanford University, and would like to invite you to visit our campus as part of our admissions process for study towards the Ph.D. degree starting autumn quarter, 2010-11.
We find it very helpful to meet prospective students so that we may better understand where you might fit within the various research groups in the Department. A visit allows you to get a better idea of how your interests match our faculty, and also provides an opportunity to meet current students and learn more about the academic and social environment at Stanford.
We hope that you can participate in our prospective-student group visit on February 17-19; please see below for detailed information. We will assist you with up to $500 of your travel expenses. You may also wish to ask other schools to which you have applied if they would consider sharing travel expenses with Stanford (typically you would then seek to divide your actual expenses equally between all those schools that you visit).
Because your interests seem to match best those of Professor Segall, please contact him by email or phone to discuss your research interests. You may wish to contact other faculty before the visit if you would like to speak with them about their research programs as well.
Congratulations on your excellent academic achievements! If you have any questions, please contact me at (650) 723-8067 (zebker@stanford.edu) or Tara Ilich, Student Services Manager, at (650) 724-3293 (tilich@stanford.edu). Please let me know by e-mail as soon as you have made your decision about visiting. We hope to see you at Stanford.
Sincerely,
Howard Zebker
Admissions Chair and Professor
Geophysics
