Dear Ms Dmitrieva
I have checked on the status of your application for graduate school at the University of Miami (UM). As far as I can tell, your application is complete, and of course is very strong. I expect you will be getting a formal letter of acceptance from the university in about a month, which will include an offer for a monthly stipend and tuition remission (i.e., graduate students accepted by our school are not expected to pay tuition).
In the mean time, I wanted to write to you informally to say that we (Dr.'s Amelung, Wdowinksi, and myself) are looking forward to working with you. You will be free to work with any or all of us (most of our students work on several projects), and on just about any topic that you are interested in and that has high scientific value. Our students often publish in journals such as Nature or Science and go on to prestigious jobs in academia or lucrative jobs in industry. Our research group is at the cutting edge of innovative applications in space geodesy, not only for "standard" applications in earthquake and volcano deformation, but also in the new and expanding field of global change. You will be joining an international group, with students and post-docs from US, France, Germany, UK, Turkey, China, and Latin America. I've attached a reprint on a recent earthquake study in Peru with post-doc Juliet Biggs, and a pre-print of a paper that one of our students and I, along with Dr. Wdowinski, just submitted to Nature on melting of the Greenland ice cap; these two contributions give a "flavor" of some of our recent work.
I hope you will be able to accept the offer from UM, and I look forward to working with you.
Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year
Sincerely
Tim Dixon

Date: 2009-12-23 11:29 pm (UTC)

I'm very excited about the wonderful news and I can't wait to see the official letter. Thank you for getting back to me so fast. And thank you a lot for the pdf files; it's great to hear more about your research.
